The MANTIONE family originates in the village of Montedoro within the Caltanissetta (CL) Province of the Region of Sicily, Italy. Founded during the first half of 1600 by the noble Aragona Tagliavia family, it was built on a small mountain over an area characterized by the production of sulfur, called Sicily's "oro" (gold). Thus the town was named "Montedoro" and it was the first Sicilian town to hold the world record for sulfur extraction and production. Afterwards, the town's dominion passed to the princes Pignatelli until 1812, when the feudal rights were dissolved across Italy. The MANTIONE surname is the most common of top ten surnames within Montedoro with 126 families.
