The IORIO (or YORIO, if anglicized) family originated in the small village of Castelmauro within the Campobasso (CB) Province of the Region of Molise Italy. Previously called "Castellucio Acquaborrana," the town had its origin in the Middle Ages on the slopes of Monte Mauro, amid thick woods of beech trees, along the left bank of the Biferno River. In the Middle Ages, this small center enjoyed a remakable importance, thanks to the powerful feudal families of the Cantelmo, D'Evoli and Mormile, who surrounded the town with high walls where only three doors of Castello, Lavaturo and Popolo opened.
